Heaven and Earth

By David Embury

Mt 5:17 Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.

The question is WHEN was this to be?

Mt 5:18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

Plain and simple, according to our Lord: The Law MUST first be fulfilled and complete in Him BEFORE the heaven and earth disappear!

If the literal "heaven and earth" must first"pass away" i.e., be literally destroyed - which it clearly presently is not, then Christ's salvation is yet incomplete and we are all STILL under the Law – under the curse and still lost in our sins. Again, if death still has its sting [sin], then we MUST conclude that sin still has its strength [the Law], which means that Christ is yet to be "the end of the law." If indeed the last enemy to be destroyed, being death, has not yet been defeated then we are truly left in the predicament as expressed in Jeremiah:

"The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved!" Jer 8:20 Cf. Prov 13:12.

Jesus, however, was not referring to terrestrial or celestial bodies etc; once again he was talking 'covenantal transition' – the ending of the Old Covenant Mosaic world of sin and sacrifice with the coming in of the endless New Covenant age of mercy and grace – the ages to come, a "world without end" Eph 3:21; Isa 54:17.

In that He says, "A new covenant," He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away. Heb 8:13
